About Real Online Ruler

Real Online Ruler is a free tool that turns your phone, tablet, laptop, or monitor into a ruler you can measure real objects with. It works in your browser, in inches, centimeters, and millimeters, with no app to install and no account to create.

Why We Built It

Sooner or later, everyone needs to measure something when there’s no ruler nearby. Many online rulers look the part but assume a fixed pixel size, and that assumption fails because screens differ. The same 1920 × 1080 pixel grid can be a 13 inch laptop or a 32 inch monitor. We built this site so that an inch on the screen is an inch in real life.

How It Stays True to Size

A browser knows how many pixels your screen has, but not how large it is, so the ruler has to be calibrated once. There are 3 ways to do it:

  • Auto-Detect Device: compares your screen with 90 known devices and uses the published screen size.
  • Screen Diagonal: works out the pixel density from the size on your spec sheet.
  • Credit Card: matches an outline to any standard card, which measures your real screen directly.

What We Care About

  • Honest accuracy: each calibration method states its limits, and we tell you when to reach for calipers or a physical ruler instead.
  • Privacy: the site never uses your camera, and your calibration stays in your browser. Our Privacy Policy covers the details.
  • Getting out of your way: there are no sign-ups and no downloads, and the ruler keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
  • Access for everyone: every control has a keyboard shortcut, and screen readers announce each new measurement.
